‘Nhamvidash’ by Kees van Schijndel

My new album, ‘Nhamvidash’  is released on all streaming platforms. The album features 8 original tracks—3 instrumental and 5 vocal—with beautiful 6-part saxophone arrangements performed by Paul van de Oever.

The title track,‘Nhamvidash’ tells the story of a boy who adores a goddess that helps him navigate through difficult times. She sends him spiritual and celestial messages, such as shooting stars and gentle whispers, guiding him along the way. However, one night, when the boy rushes to the garden to find her, she is suddenly gone. He must now solve his problems on his own, holding on to the memory of Nhamvidash and praying to her.

All compositions and arrangements are created by Kees van Schijndel. Lyrics for two songs have been written by Deborah J. Carter. I invite you to listen to the album and join me on this journey. Let yourself be carried away by the sounds and stories of “Nhamvidash.”

Bio

Kees van Schijndel (born 1999 in ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the Netherlands) is a musician, composer and arranger whose musical world refuses to sit still. Trained as a jazz bassist at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, his main instruments are bass guitar, double bass and guitar — instruments he plays across a wide range of styles, from jazz and soul to R&B and Brazilian music, without ever losing his own voice.

He released his debut EP Unknown Space in 2021, recorded during the Covid pandemic with modern jazz quintet KETJAP. The EP — which received airplay on NPO Radio 2 Soul & Jazz — captures five original compositions born from early-morning bursts of inspiration. His second album Nhamvidash followed in 2025: eight original tracks, three instrumental and five vocal, featuring six-part saxophone arrangements by Paul van den Oever and Roos Manshanden.

As a composer and arranger, Kees wrote the complete repertoire of the Kees van Schijndel Collective — 14 original compositions that are personal and accessible, yet rooted in the craft and depth of the jazz tradition. The Collective consists of nine professional musicians: three saxophones, guitar, Fender Rhodes, bass, drums and two vocalists.

Kees is active across a range of ensembles: as bassist and arranger with Het Brabants Jazz Orkest, as bassist with the Brazilian-Portuguese ensemble JAFABONO and the Boschveldband (Balkan and non-Western repertoire). Together with Gerrie van Heck he forms the rock-and-roll duo Duketown Brothers. Earlier highlights include performing in the Conservatory Big Band at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam and in the musicals De Mol en de Paradijsvogel (OpusOne), Urinetown (M-Workx), 9 to 5 (M-Workx).
